Equine PR Expert Tapped to Give Seven Ideas at American Horse Publications Seminar

Learn how to get the most out of your next press release.

Sullivan Higdon & Sink’s Abby Strawder, senior reputation manager, was chosen to speak at the American Horse Publication (AHP) seminar panel recently held in Florida. Strawder was one of five equine public relations experts selected to present a collaboration titled 45 Ideas – Best Practices for Writing Press Releases.

Presenters were given one minute each to cover one of their seven ideas before rotating to the next speaker. The panel covered topics from how to craft an eye-catching headline to tailoring the story for your target audience. Strawder’s top seven tips to keep in mind for your next news release:

• Ask if the content is best suited for a press release.
• Tell a story.
• Include a key takeaway.
• Write in third person whenever possible.
• Digitally optimize the release.
• Pretend you’re a reporter.
• Avoid corporate speak or buzzwords.
• Proof, proof again, and have someone else proof, too.
• Include data whenever possible.

This was one of several learning sessions hosted at AHP’s 46th annual seminar. SHS attended on behalf of Merial, an animal health client. The mission of AHP is “to promote better understanding and cooperation between all facets of the horse industry, irrespective of breed.” This rang true as sessions were geared toward digital, print and the future of equine media to benefit industry communicators.
