SHS Receives Award for Doc Kickstarter Campaign

Kickstarter campaign to support B-29 Bomber Doc’s flight earns recognition from PRSA

Sullivan Higdon & Sink (SHS) recently received the Award of Excellence from the 2016 PRSA Silver Anvil Awards for its work on the Doc’s Friends Kickstarter Campaign.

“This is the premier awards competition in the PR industry and it’s great to see our work recognized on such a large scale,” said Lathi de Silva, vice president of reputation management at SHS. “While we couldn’t be more thrilled to receive such a great honor, we are even more excited to see how our work prompted generous contributions that flooded in from all across the country to turn this iconic warbird back into a working, flying piece of history.”

After four months of planning, the 30-day Kickstarter campaign launched with a goal of $137,500 and a strategy of reaching beyond local support to gain awareness from a national audience. The SHS team used a variety of tactics to reach this goal including executing a publicity plan, targeting national and industry reporters, campaign awareness emails and robust social media content. The campaign received media coverage in nearly 30 national and industry sources such as USA Today and Warbird News.

“This concentrated effort could not have been successful without the constant attention of SHSers who stepped up to be involved,” said Tom Bertels, managing partner at SHS and Doc’s Friends board member. “From interns to partners, it was all hands on deck from start to finish. Every single function contributed.

The campaign was developed to garner additional funding for the flight-test phase of Doc, a restored World War II B-29 bomber. In addition to exceeding its fundraising goal, the campaign received significant contributions from outside Kansas to allow for ongoing support.

PRSA Silver Anvil Awards are a global competition that recognize excellence in the field of public relations and are the industry’s most distinguished honor.
